President Trump accused former Secretary of State John Kerry Thursday of violating the Logan Act by meeting with Iranian officials last year.
“You know, John Kerry speaks to them a lot, and John Kerry tells them not to call. That’s a violation of the Logan Act, and frankly he should be prosecuted on that,” Trump said at the White House.
Trump argued that if a Republican were doing the same thing to a Democratic president, charges would be brought.
“But my people don’t want to do anything, only the Democrats do that kind of stuff. If it were the opposite way, they’d prosecute him under the Logan Act,” he said.
The Boston Globe called the early 2018 meeting between Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif an “aggressive yet stealthy” mission to put pressure on the Trump administration to keep the Obama-era nuclear deal in some form.
Responding on “Fox News @ Night,” Gen. Jack Keane (Ret.) said the meetings were “pretty outrageous behavior” by Kerry
“Kerry disagrees with [Trump’s] foreign policy and is absolutely undermining it with a foreign government. Not just a foreign government, but an adversary of the United States since 1980,” said Keane, a Fox News senior strategic analyst.
A spokesman for Kerry pushed back on Trump’s remarks, calling them “simply wrong, end of story.”
“He’s wrong about the facts, wrong about the law, and sadly he’s been wrong about how to use diplomacy to keep America safe. Secretary Kerry helped negotiate a nuclear agreement that worked to solve an intractable problem,” the spokesman said.
Keane said the Trump administration is the first to “truly confront” the Iranian regime.
“You can see what is happening. Their economy is being crippled by the sanctions. A significant amount of unrest. And they are trying to figure out what to do about this. And they are thinking of some kind of moves against U.S. soldiers. That’ll be a significant mistake if they do it. I don’t think it will be anything comprehensive, because that would bring the United States military to bear,” said Keane.
